Beginning with the class of 2010, students will be required to complete a graduation project before they can receive a high school diploma. The graduation project is an opportunity for students to explore and investigate a topic of interest. The project is designed to give students an authentic opportunity to direct their own learning through research, self-reflection, and presentation. The graduation project will assure that students are able to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information before graduating high school.
The Graduation Project has been established by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and endorsed by WCPSS and Apex High School. Students not completing the graduation project will not receive a diploma.>
The faculty and staff at Apex High School expects each student will find a unique and interesting path toward success while completeing the graduation project.
Required ComponentsWhile the project is primarily an independent study project, at Apex High School, each student will be assigned a faculty member to serve as a "coach" who can guide the student through the various deadlines.
In addition to a "coach", each student will choose their own "mentor", a guide from within the community. This individual should be someone knowledgeable in the area of the student's interest. The mentor will provide insight and assistance as the student completes his or her "product".
During the senior year, the entire project will be reviewed by a panel of both faculty members and community volunteers on a date assigned by the school. The Graduation Project Committee will ensure that all specific graduation project requirements have been completed.
